10 Most Common Sports-Related Orthopedic Injuries

Dr Dan Albright sports injuriesSports injuries are a constant concern for athletes. While some are more common than others, they can all cause permanent damage to careers if not noticed, cared for, and allowed to heal.

Common Sports Injuries

Sprains. Ankle sprains are among the most common orthopedic sports injuries and limit or restrict foot usage until recovery.

Groin Pull. Groin strain is also common. This injury occurs around the femur from rapid direction changes in movement, usually as part of regular exercise or heavy lifting.

Hamstrings. On the back of the thigh, Hamstrings can tear or pull as well. This injury can be severe if not treated, restricting movement.

Shin Splints. Shin splints can pose this threat as well. The damage is a running injury on the leg's front below the knees.

ACL. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are a common orthopedic sports injury. They occur when the tissue that connects to the knee tears. Like similar torn ligament or tendon issues, this injury requires surgery and physical therapy to rectify.

Patellofemoral Syndrome.  This syndrome is a common running injury caused by constant pressure on the kneecap. Long periods of sitting, squatting, and running can exacerbate the pain.

Elbows. Tennis elbow, also known as golfer's elbow, stems from the arm's constant swinging motions. In addition to inflammation of the elbow itself, the upper or forearm can also experience pain.

Sciatica. Sciatica is a form of nerve pain in the lower spine that can radiate down a person's leg. This injury occurs if the various discs that make up the spine start to wear closer together. It can often take a doctor to diagnose this sports injury source, and the spinal column is more complex and sensitive than some people might realize.

Shoulder injuries. Injuries to the shoulder can occur in various sports, though baseball-related rotator cuff issues are perhaps the most well known.

Fractures. Fractures are another common sports injury, especially in high contact sports. There are two kinds of fractures, simple and compound. A simple fracture is one where the bone is still under the skin, while compound fractures mean the bone has ruptured through the skin. Both require immediate medical attention and a fair bit of healing and therapy to recover.

Prevention

Knowing the most common sports injuries is a good step towards avoiding them. Proper muscle warm-ups and stretching and targeted conditioning reduce the chances of injury.  Injuries and accidents happen in sports, but it's essential to keep them rare.
